Do You Know Your Passwords?

October 8th, 2011 . by Felix

Last weekend my credit union went to a new online system. When I tried to log on to my account it wasn’t accepting my password. After a couple more failed attempts it locked me out! I had to wait until the next day to call them when they opened at 9am  to have my password reset. Turns out with the new system they had changed everyone’s password to the last 4 digits of their social security number.  Not a smart move on their part but that is another story.

At work I went to retrieve my phone messages, They phone system didn’t recognize my password and again after two attempts it locked me out.! Not a good week for passwords!

These were two minor inconveniences. But it got me thinking. What if the grid is down, or you have no internet access. What if there is a cyber attack on the banking system? What if cell service goes out? Do you even know your friends and families phone numbers?

These days we rarely even get paper statements for bills and banking. Printing out your bank statements, utility bills, investment accounts and other information you depend on could be a life saver in the above scenarios. Making a list of phone numbers, addresses and passwords would also be worth having.

Hard copy printed paper backups of your most important papers will give you peace of mind in the event of the unexpected.

The more we depend on technology the greater chance it will fail us when we need it the most.
